On behalf of Young Munster RFC, I extend a warm welcome to all our members, supporters, match officials, visiting teams and their supporters. Last season was full of achievements for Young Munster RFC. For the first time in our history, we successfully defended the Munster Senior Cup. We also won the Munster Junior Cup and the Donal Walsh Cup (Munster u20.5 age grade). Winning all 3 adult cups in the same season is another first for the Club. We contested the final of the Bateman Cup for the first time since winning it in 1928. We also had numerous successes at underage level. These results, plus our respectable showing in Division 1A of the Energia All Ireland League, led to Young Munster RFC being named Club of the Year. We will not rest on our laurels, however, and will strive to maintain or even better this record. I wish the teams, coaches, and backroom staff every success this season. Our head coach, Gearóid Prendergast, has also brought great honour to Young Munster by being chosen to coach the All-Ireland club team for a second time.
The last 2 years have been very tough for a lot of people due mainly to the pandemic. Like many other clubs we have lost ex-players, committee members, members, and supporters. May they rest in peace.
Since its foundation in 1895, Young Munster has always been a community and family-based club, happy to welcome all-comers into our ‘club family’ as players, supporters and/or volunteers. A lot of our players have gone on to achieve provincial and national honour and I’ve no doubt that this will continue. We have some fantastic volunteers whose efforts keep this club ticking over. My thanks to each one of you. You are all incredible and Young Munster RFC is for ever in your debt. I would encourage others to get involved in voluntary efforts for the club.
Of course, as well as hard work, clubs take a lot of money to run and in this regard, we are so lucky to have very generous sponsors and well-supported fundraisers. The unwavering support of our main sponsors, Pat Burke and PBC Ltd., along with our many other sponsors, kept us going during the pandemic and continues to play a valuable role in the club, allowing us to maintain and improve the facilities we offer to all our players, both adult and underage. Our sincere thanks.
Our annual golf classic and other fundraisers continue to bring in vital funds while offering supporters enjoyable chances to meet and socialise in different settings. We look forward to welcoming you all to the various events, details of which will be posted online and on the noticeboards in the clubhouse.
For today, I hope there are no injuries and that the players, the referee and the match officials get the respect they deserve so that we can all enjoy the game.
Thank you.
